Deep cuts to SNAP benefits impacting AZ tribal & rural families
Families are hurting because of deep cuts to SNAP benefits. Our team of organizers have been working with families to help lift up their stories around the impact of the SNAP crisis. For the first time many caregivers are writing their own stories and submitting them to our congressional and state leadership. They are holding elected leaders accountable and demanding they take immediate action. Our voices are powerful. We have to use it.
Thank you families for your courage in sharing a bit of your experience with us and for not giving up. We know It’s tough and many times deflating, but you are not the only ones experiencing these challenges. You are not alone. These are threats to our communities and democracy.
Interesting in sharing your story and writing your letter? We can help. Email us at info@arizonanativevote.org or call and leave a msg at (928) 489-8511
May Day Action
ANV held three Planting Civic Seeds community events in White Mountain Apache, Hopi, and Navajo Nation. Each event included a workshop on Arizona SNAP Benefits, where community members learned how to advocate for themselves and access available resources. The events generated more than a dozen letters from community members to their elected officials holding them accountable for the funding cuts for SNAP in Arizona. Events were intentionally designed to reflect the cultures and interests of each community, incorporating crafting tables, sewing classes, and arrowhead knapping, alongside a free lunch. This approach fostered a relaxed, relational atmosphere that encouraged participation and civic learning. As one of our culture keepers stated, “sewing and the arts is social change”. These gatherings allow community members to connect, share challenges and information, and begin planning and taking action together on the issues they care about.
