Spotlight on Arizona Native Vote's College Interns: Inspiring Youth Leadership and Community Engagement

Arizona Native Vote is making strides in civic engagement with the dedicated efforts of a passionate group of college interns. Valadia Mejia, Sierra Tsosie, Chalmer Gambler, Cody Elliot, Shyler Martin, and Rauni Holguin each bring unique perspectives and a shared commitment to empowering Native communities. These interns work tirelessly to foster a voting culture and promote health, well-being, and community involvement across Arizona's Native populations. Their mission is simple yet powerful: to guide, uplift, and serve their communities by engaging Native voices in the democratic process.

One of the core objectives for these interns is to make voting accessible, welcoming, and relevant for all, whether individuals are voting for the first time or are seasoned voters. By assisting community members throughout their voting journeys, these interns are helping break down barriers and building a strong, inclusive civic framework. "I am passionate about promoting the health and well-being of my community," says Shyler Martin, who, like his peers, understands the importance of every voice and vote in shaping the future.

Their responsibilities go beyond voter registration drives. Each intern sees their work as part of a larger movement toward community empowerment. For Cody Elliot, it’s about “uplifting my community through my work as an intern,” while Valadia Mejia emphasizes her commitment to “guiding others to succeed on their academic, professional, and personal pathways.” These interns are not only encouraging voter turnout but also supporting individuals as they strive for success in various aspects of life, showing the deep interconnectedness between civic engagement and personal growth.

As part of Arizona Native Vote, these interns represent a new generation of Native leaders who aim to ensure that every voice in their community is heard and respected. By connecting people with voting resources and creating a supportive environment for civic participation, they are setting a precedent for others to follow. Their work is a testament to the power of community-driven initiatives and the role that young leaders can play in building a vibrant, resilient, and engaged society.

Through their enthusiasm, dedication, and leadership, Arizona Native Vote’s interns are showing what it means to be deeply invested in the future of their community. They are not only inspiring voter participation but also creating a legacy of empowerment that will shape Arizona’s Native communities for years to come.

Keep an eye out for more in-depth profiles on their perspectives of the importance of voting and the role they see themselves playing in shaping the future of Native communities.
